Notes from our Executive Director

March has come marching in with its own rhythm. As I reflect on the last month, three moments stand out that I want to share with you, each one a reminder of the Lord’s favor.

In early January, some friends and very enthusiastic supporters of Lubbock Impact (who also happen to be very enthusiastic mahjong players) asked if they could host a fundraiser. We said yes, not quite knowing the kind of joyful mahjong mayhem and new friendships the Lovin’ on Lubbock committee would create.

After only seven weeks of planning, this night brought together 180 people who gathered to learn about the mission of Lubbock Impact and raised over $40,000. February is typically one of the lowest giving months of the year, yet the Lord made a remarkable provision. It was a beautiful reminder that friends gathered around a game table can also gather their hearts to love on neighbors who come to Lubbock Impact seeking hope.

That same spirit of provision and community showed up again in a much quieter moment as well, when a recent conversation with one of our participants reminded me why Lubbock Impact exists for the working poor – the opportunity to meet basic needs while building a community that grows hope.

When I first met this participant, he and his wife were visiting the pantry for the first time. He works at a grocery store, but that job alone does not meet all their family’s basic needs. Over time, they also began attending the Community Meal and building relationships. Before our Fun Friday Chili Cook Off, when I was preparing three types of chili: turkey, pork, and beef, he stopped to talk with me. He asked about the cook-off and shared that he had switched shifts with a fellow employee so that he and his wife could attend our Friday Fun night. He and his wife agreed that they needed to do something besides work and stay at home.

When money is tight, “Friday fun” often isn’t an option since most activities come with a price tag.  At Lubbock Impact, we organize monthly events so that families and neighbors can spend an enjoyable evening together without worrying about expenses. It’s simply a chance to relax and unwind.

For this participant, it was something worth planning for, and he had rearranged his schedule to be there. After that conversation, I remember thinking what an honor it is to be a place that someone chooses to be, especially when it means shifting their schedules around to do so. That conversation reminded me again why Lubbock Impact exists – to build relationships and to be a safe place where community can gather.

And then, just days later, the Lord offered another reminder of His kindness.

On March 4th, Mayor Mark McBrayer honored Lubbock Impact as his charity of choice during his State of the City luncheon. That recognition was a humbling reminder of the many people who work tirelessly to ensure that community needs are met – volunteers and donors who pour their time, talent, and treasure into their neighbors through Lubbock Impact. Mayor McBrayer sees the difference being made and acknowledged it during his address. It felt like a moment of encouragement, a reminder of the Lord’s favor on a ministry that simply desires to be steady and true today and in the days to come.

I pray that the Lord brings favor into your life as well, as you seek to honor Him with a steady and faithful spirit.
