Esther’s Story

Volunteer & Clothing Closet

Esther grew up on the East Coast and began volunteering with her mom and aunts at a young age. “I was one of those candy stripe girls”, she said as she beamed about her early days volunteering in the local hospital alongside her aunt who was a nurse.

Around the end of the Vietnam war, Esther entered into the United States Air Force where she put her education and teaching background on hold to be cross trained as an aircraft maintenance tech. As she moved around the world serving our country, Esther says she “always found a place to volunteer in every place [she] lived”. In Germany, she served in a local orphanage. Near Chicago she served at a soup kitchen. When the military transferred Esther to Reese Air Force Base years ago, she stayed in Lubbock, Texas where she volunteers with many local organizations, including Lubbock Impact.

Though Esther “feels fortunate” with what she has, she lives off of a limited income through social security. While she started out in a volunteering role in Lubbock Impact’s Clothing Closet, she soon after saw how she could benefit from the assistance as well. Once every few months, Esther will book her appointment to shop for 10 items in the Clothing Closet, freeing up some of her limited income for her other needs.

Esther’s love of community has erupted from her time in the Clothing Closet both as a volunteer and as a participant. She regularly attends the weekly Community Meal, monthly Senior Lunches and often goes back to her education roots by attending empowerment programs like Faith & Finance. “I love the fellowship” Esther expressed. “People treat people like people here and they don’t look down on others who are in need.”

Volunteers and participants alike are influenced by Esther’s servant heart. To fellow participants, she humbly lends wisdom and advice to those younger than her in classes like Faith & Finance, invites other food insecure seniors to meals and brings kids from her community to Lubbock Impact for meals and children’s ministry. For fellow volunteers, Esther is a constant friend, reliable worker and a pure joy to be around.

As we serve the working poor in our Lubbock community, we think of Esther, who sometimes just needs a little bit of help and even more than that, wants to be a part of Christ-centered community. “You are meeting physical and emotional needs here,” Esther expressed “and Lubbock is better for it.”
