Karenda’s Story
Spiritual Care
As a single mom of three kids, Karenda was not just looking for practical assistance, but a community to lean on.
When Karenda first started coming to Lubbock Impact a year ago, it was to utilize the services offered through The Free Clinic which she learned about from her coworker. While her children had Medicaid for their insurance, Karenda could not afford any for herself but had pressing physical and mental health struggles to address.
She continued to come almost every Wednesday evening to receive mental health services. From these services, she learned about the Community Meal where she was able to receive a hot meal for her and her kids which was, “a true blessing” she says. Knowing the meal and community that came along with it was available to her and her family, Karenda continued to bring her kids even after she no longer needed The Free Clinic’s services.
Her oldest daughter, Tayshai, began to attend the Youth Ministry programs offered after Community Meal each week and even attended Kids’ Camp this summer. Because Tayshai was getting involved in the ministry opportunities at Lubbock Impact, Karenda started to stay for the Women’s Ministry program as well.
“It flows so freely” Karenda joyfully said as she described the community she’s found within Women’s Ministry. While she describes herself as “not a very social person”, every week, she can be found staying late to pray with, laugh with and cry with the other women in her group.
Karenda just started a new job working with young children at a local daycare. She expressed her nervousness in her first week as she worked to juggle work with the drop off and pick up of her kids from school amongst all of life’s additional hassles. Her tense shoulders relaxed as she got to fellowship with other mothers during Bible study that week, sharing her real life and how she was making efforts to adjust to the new schedules.
Karenda expressed how exceedingly grateful she is for the community she has found within the ministries at Lubbock Impact. She is surrounded by support of those in similar stages of life and says, “I just can’t imagine doing life without this ministry.”
